Autumn and time for some cosy nights in

Yes it’s that time of year when we all anchor down and settle indoors for some cosy nights in by the fire. It’s time to swap salads and skimpy tees for stews and comfy sweaters. Autumn is without a doubt my favourite season but it never used to be! For years I used Autumn as a mourning season, I loved summer so much and always found it hard moving towards  darker evenings and cold frosty mornings. The inevitable stressful build up going towards Christmas meant I never really enjoyed or noticed what is, in fact,  the most beautiful time of year. It is a season full of cliches and yes, I love each and every single one of them from roasting chestnuts to indulging in the best homemade hot chocolate!

Transitioning into Autumn

Transitioning your interior decor into a cosy autumnal retreat full of muted shades of browns and oranges needn’t be expensive. Mother Nature can supply you with endless amount of twigs, fallen branches, pine cones, leaves, berries to decorate your home with! So wrap up warm and go for a walk, you will be surprised how much you will gather and the best part is, it costs nothing! And, in a time when we are aware of the damages made to the planet due to over consumerism, it makes sense to look around us and use what nature gives us before rushing into stores. Perhaps even have a go at making your own Autumn wreath, I think they are so much prettier than the Christmas ones!

Of course I would be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted with new throws or candles or maybe even a new piece of furniture and that’s fine, everything in moderation! The most important part is to be mindful and reuse, re purpose and  buy second hand where possible.

Decorate with all your senses

Scent is often overlooked but it is an integral part of your decor, it makes your room come alive. I use scented candles all year round but in Autumn I tend to switch to a more woody fragrance, bergamot or frankincense. I always choose vegan soy wax candles with essential oil. They smell so much nicer and are all natural.

Rearrange furniture

Moving furniture is an occupational hazard with me! Quite often it’s all that is needed to refresh a room. Saying that, this year I am replacing my 10 year old sofa  for something new that doesn’t give me a backache each time I binge watch a new series on Netflix! But aside from that I shall just be and swapping pieces from room to room and rearranging furniture around the fire, which, let’s face it provides endless source of gratifying and free entertainment.

Accessorise

Autumn is first and foremost a time when you can bring the outdoors in and accessorise with a mix of natural materials that complement those autumnal hues. Layer big fluffy throws with linen pillows, fill baskets up with logs, dim the lights!

Have yourself a cosy night in

My idea of a cosy evening is ridiculously simple. There is nothing quite so satisfying than closing the curtains, lighting the fire and the candles and just enjoying the moment, being present and thankful for all that we have.
