My colourful journey to a white interior
“The first of all single colours is white … We shall set down white for the representative of light, without which no colour can be seen.” – Leonardo Da Vinci
One of the questions I get asked frequently by people is why did I choose white, why am I afraid of colour quickly followed by isn't white dull, boring, hard to keep clean and finally why do I follow a lot of people with colourful interiors and pin numerous inspiring and colourful interiors?
I didn't choose white as an interior colour, I needed it!
Let me explain...when I first started my decorating journey I was all for bright colours... It went from lime green to aubergine, indigo and canary yellow! No fear there and no white! Forward a few years and I discover Abigail Ahern. Her super cool dark interiors wowed me and transformed me into the biggest fan of Farrow and Ball's downpipe!
But still, somehow, none of it ever gelled with me. I suffer from depression (bipolar) and anxiety. Home is my safe place, my haven but it never quite felt like the peaceful retreat I so badly needed. I loved all those colours in everyone else's home and I couldn't figure out why it didn't work with me...
The truth is I needed something more serene and paired back
I realised that my home, the colour of the walls, the objects I collect all had the power to affect how I felt physically and emotionally. I needed an antidote to my very chaotic mind.
So, I got the paint brushes out again and started painting everything white!
The result was unbelievable. Seeing the white on the walls immediately transformed how I felt inside. Somehow it made me feel more at peace with my inner turmoil. Now, don't think I am telling you white paint is the miracle cure for depression and anxiety! What I am saying is that the environment you're living in, your surroundings all affect the way you feel. Discovering this has helped me on my journey.
What I learnt from that...
White is associated with peace, clarity and spirituality. I severely lacked in all and it has helped me relax and heal. The more white I add the more homely and comfortable my house feels.
In decorating, there is a big difference between liking a style or a colour and being able to live with it. Whilst Instagram and Pinterest are great sources of inspiration when it comes to choosing paint colour and decor they can also overwhelm you.
So how can you tell which colour you are really going to be able to live with?
I am afraid trial and error is the best I can come up with! Trust your instincts, take inspiration at what you feel most comfortable wearing, be mindful of how you feel spending time in a light room or a dark room.
Finally, to answer the ever question is white boring? No, you can use it with accent colours (I have green accents all over the house), it emphasises textures like weathered wood and there are so many different shades of white you can layer anything ranging from chalky whites to pearly creamy whites or even biscuity whites. The choice is endless.
